Strawberries: Your Health’s Red Passion

by Niki Kefala

I always loved eating strawberries and not only that. When I was a little girl I used to put them on my lips as a homemade lipstick.

Now I know that this small red fruit (they contain phytonutrients and flavanoids which makes them red) has also many benefits for our health. Strawberries are rich in vitamin C, potassium, folic acid (or folate) and fiber and all this for only 50 calories. Sweet…

Fiber is essential for minimizing constipation. On the other hand high potassium intakes have been linked with a reduced risk of stroke and also recommended to those with high blood pressure.

If you are expecting a baby you need to know that folic acid intake is essential for pregnant women. Many studies have shown that women who get folic acid during early pregnancy reduce the risk that their baby will be born with a serious neural tube defect. Folate may also help with depression, so eat strawberries for better mood.

Strawberries contain antioxidants that work against free radicals and helping prevent cancer. Anti-cancer benefits from strawberries are best documented in the case of breast, cervical, colon, and esophageal cancer. This powerful fruit because of the anti-inflammatory effects help to alleviate symptoms of allergies and is an excellent choice for diabetics, as it has a lower glycemic index than many other fruits do.
